The author was born in Thrissur Kerala India in 1943 to KK George and Theresa Mary Mullassery , graduates of Doveton Girls School (Chennai). Ramanujan began writing fiction at the age of eight. The story is about an 11-year old girl who is named Alia/Aliya. Her father is a successful film director who is away most of the time at events around his films. She spends her time alone except for her mother, dad’s secretary, and maids at home. The story begins with Alia telling about how an electrician comes to her room to fix the electricity. She lets him in and he has her lay on the bed while he works. She tells him about how she would like to be in his place, fixing things in another girl’s life, but instead only being allowed to be around them briefly. The electrician makes a comment that causes Alia to have a vision of herself being in another girl’s life. This visually shows the reader what Alia is imagining in vivid detail. To her, this other girl is given everything that she wishes she could have including nice clothing, friends, and even love from someone who cares for her deeply. The electrician notices Alia’s confusion and tries to make her more comfortable. He makes the bed, puts new sheets on it, and even compliments Alia on her beauty. This shows the reader how the electrician is not only fixing things for this little girl but also liking her. The novel was published by Oxford University Press (India) in 2011 . It has gone into paperback in 2012 . It has received praise for its rare portrayals of girls as more than just "eye candy" for boys.
